The History of the Wheel
The wheel has been an important invention for a very long time. It has been used many different ways throughout history. Here are some examples:
- Nearly 6,000 years ago, the wheel was invented in what is now Iraq. It was used first to make pottery.
- Later, the wheel was used in chariots Egypt and Sumer. People in ancient Greece and Rome also invented the water wheel for power.
- The wheel was introduced to Europe and Asia around 5,000 years ago.
- Around 4,000 years ago, people invented spoked wheels. A spoke is a piece that goes from the center of the wheel to the outside of the wheel.
- In 1785, the power loom (a machine for weaving) was invented in England. This machine used the wheel to make cloth.
- The first car was invented in the 1880s.
- In 1971, astronauts went to the moon with the lunar rover (a small vehicle for driving on the moon). The picture above shows one of the lunar rover's tires.
