What is a Font?
1A font is the style and design of the letters and characters used in printing and writing. 2The history of fonts goes back to the beginning of writing, when different cultures created their own unique styles of writing. 3In China, movable type was invented in the 11th century. 4However, it was not until the 15th century with the invention of the printing press that fonts started to evolve, and they changed quite rapidly. 5Over time, new styles and designs of fonts have been made, and today there are a myriad of fonts available for use in various forms of media.
Before computers, printers used a box of metal type and put the individual letters together using a composing stick.
In order to print correctly, the letters had to be reversed. Can you read the type backwards? The first few words say:
“The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog … “ This sentence is a pangram (a sentence that includes every single
letter of the alphabet, from A to Z, at least once).
Read the title and look at the photo. What is the general topic of the paragraph?

Sentence 3: What is type? We usually think of this word with two meanings:
- (verb) to write using a keyboard
- (noun) a category or kind of thing
- Here, however, it has a different meaning. The clue is movable. What root do you see in this word? move

Sentence 4: What is evolve? What part of speech is it? What is a synonym in the sentence?

✔ Evolve means to change over time. It is a verb. The synonym in the sentence is "changed."
Sentence 5: What is myriad? First, make a guess. Then look it up in a dictionary or translator. Was your guess correct? Why or why not?

✔ Myriad means a very large number or a great variety. I guessed it meant "many" because the sentence says "there are a myriad of fonts available" which means there are many fonts. My guess was correct.
