4.3.1 Spelling of Verbs When ' - ed' Is Added

Verb Examples
a. Verbs that end in a vowel + consonant + "e"
hope recite dare
hoped recited dared Drop the "e" and add -ed
b. Verbs that end in "y"
enjoy pray buy
study fry rely
enjoyed prayed bought
studied fried relied
Verbs with vowel + "y" → Add -ed
Verbs with consonant + "y" → Change "y" to "i" and add -ed
c. Verbs that end in "ie"
die lie tie
died lied tied Change "ie" to "y" and add -ed
d. Verbs that end in a vowel/consonant pattern (except -w, -x, or -y) - one-syllable verbs
rob beg drop
robbed begged dropped Double the consonant and add -ed
e. Irregular two-syllable verbs

f. Verbs that end in a two-consonant pattern

Study Tip: Repetition and Variation

Repetition becomes boring, and when we become bored, we lose focus. Our brain does not release the needed neurotransmitters which encourage our synaptic memory connections to form and grow. So, change your routine. If you are practicing verb tenses, find a different way to practice verb tenses.
