3.5 Writing the Negative of the Verb and Emphasizing the Positive with the Helping Verb Do/Does and Don't/Doesn't

Explanation Examples
When we write negative sentences (a, b), meaning that something is not true, we use do not/does not plus the base form of a main verb.
• The abbreviation for the negative is don't/doesn't (c, d).
• The added helping verb do/does is also used in the positive to emphasize that something really is true (e, f).		 a. I do not watch TV for more than an hour a day.
b. She does not drive carefully.
c. I don't watch TV for more than an hour a day.
d. She doesn't drive carefully.
e. You do drive a nice car.
f. Ms. Smith does work very hard.
The helping verb do/does is also necessary in making yes/no questions. Here, the helping verb and the main verb are split, with the subject of the sentence going between them. a. Do you have the keys for your car?
b. Does Mr. Smith have a laptop?
