The Simple Past Tense

The Simple Past Tense is used to describe actions, events, or states that began and ended at a specific time in the past. The exact time may be mentioned or understood from the context. Unlike the present perfect or continuous tenses, the Simple Past focuses on the completed action itself rather than its connection to the present or its duration.

The Simple Past is one of the most commonly used tenses for talking about past experiences, historical events, finished activities, and sequences of actions. It is often accompanied by time expressions such as yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2020, or when I was a child.

The Simple Past is commonly used to express:

• Completed actions in the past: She visited her grandparents last weekend.
• A series of completed actions: He got up, had breakfast, and left for work.
• Past habits or repeated actions: We played soccer every afternoon when we were children.
• Past states or situations: They lived in Paris for five years.
• Historical facts and events: The First World War began in 1914.

Regular verbs form the Simple Past by adding -ed to the base form, while irregular verbs have unique past forms that must be learned individually (for example, go → went, see → saw, write → wrote).
