Luyện ngữ pháp - English Grammar - Lesson 26: Adjectives as Subjective Complements)

ADJECTIVES AS SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENTS.

TÍNH TỪ LÀM BỔ NGỮ CHỦ NGỮ.

1. Adjectives as Subjective Complements

Tính từ làm Bổ ngữ Chủ ngữ

In the sentences, (1) "The tomato is a fruit," (2) "That tall boy is the winner of the race," the base word of the subjective complement is a noun, because we wish to assert (1) class, (2) identity.

Trong các câu, (1) "The tomato is a fruit," (2) "That tall boy is the winner of the race," từ cơ bản của bổ ngữ chủ ngữ là một danh từ, vì chúng ta muốn khẳng định (1) lớp, (2) sự đồng nhất.

In the sentence, "The old gentleman's face was serene and rosy," the base words of the subjective complement are the two adjectives serene and rosy, because we wish to assert the characteristics, or qualities, of the old gentleman's face.

Trong câu "The old gentleman's face was serene and rosy," từ cơ bản của bổ ngữ chủ ngữ là hai tính từ serenerosy, vì chúng ta muốn khẳng định các đặc điểm, hoặc phẩm chất, của khuôn mặt người đàn ông già.

This is a very common use of the adjective, as seen in the familiar sentences, "Grass is green," "Honey is sweet," "Ice is cold."

Đây là một cách sử dụng rất phổ biến của tính từ, như thấy trong các câu quen thuộc "Grass is green," "Honey is sweet," "Ice is cold."

2. Verbs of Being with Adjectives

Động từ chỉ Sự tồn tại với Tính từ

The verbs of being that were given in Lesson XXV, be, become, look, seem, appear, feel, smell, taste, sound, and grow, often take adjectives for subjective complements; as, "My head feels dizzy," "This sentence sounds queer," "Mary grew plump and strong."

Các động từ chỉ sự tồn tại đã được đưa ra trong Bài XXV, be, become, look, seem, appear, feel, smell, taste, sound, grow, thường nhận tính từ làm bổ ngữ chủ ngữ; như "My head feels dizzy," "This sentence sounds queer," "Mary grew plump and strong."

In some cases where the language affords no adjectives that exactly express the meaning, we use a prepositional phrase as subjective complement; as in the common expressions, "The house is on fire," "The girl is in love," "The man is in debt." None of these phrases denote place, but each of them denotes a condition.

Trong một số trường hợp ngôn ngữ không có tính từ nào diễn tả chính xác ý nghĩa, chúng ta sử dụng một cụm giới từ làm bổ ngữ chủ ngữ; như trong các cách diễn đạt thông thường "The house is on fire," "The girl is in love," "The man is in debt." Không cụm từ nào trong số này chỉ nơi chốn, nhưng mỗi cụm từ chỉ một trạng thái.

NOTE. An adjective used as a subjective complement is often modified by a prepositional phrase. If we say "The bin is full," somebody will ask "full of what?" If we say "full of apples," it is evident that the phrase of apples modifies full. We also say glad of it, tired of play, wild with joy, green with envy, etc. These expressions are different, however, from what we find in the sentence, "I was tired in the evening," where the phrase in the evening, denoting time, modifies not the adjective tired, but the two words was tired.

GHI CHÚ. Một tính từ được sử dụng như bổ ngữ chủ ngữ thường được bổ nghĩa bởi một cụm giới từ. Nếu chúng ta nói "The bin is full," ai đó sẽ hỏi "full of what?" Nếu chúng ta nói "full of apples," rõ ràng cụm từ of apples bổ nghĩa cho full. Chúng ta cũng nói glad of it, tired of play, wild with joy, green with envy, v.v. Những cách diễn đạt này khác với những gì chúng ta thấy trong câu "I was tired in the evening," trong đó cụm từ in the evening, chỉ thời gian, bổ nghĩa không phải cho tính từ tired, mà cho hai từ was tired.

3. Summary

Tóm tắt
  • An adjective, or a group of words of which an adjective is the base word, may be the subjective complement of an intransitive verb.
Một tính từ, hoặc một nhóm từ trong đó tính từ là từ cơ bản, có thể là bổ ngữ chủ ngữ của một động từ nội động.
