CLASSIFICATION OF ADVERBS. SIMPLE ADVERBS.
PHÂN LOẠI TRẠNG TỪ. TRẠNG TỪ ĐƠN.
1. Definition of Simple Adverbs
Định nghĩa Trạng từ Đơn
In Lesson X it was shown that an adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Select the adverbs in the following sentences, and tell what words they modify:
Trong Bài X đã chỉ ra rằng trạng từ bổ nghĩa cho động từ, tính từ hoặc một trạng từ khác. Hãy chọn các trạng từ trong các câu sau và cho biết chúng bổ nghĩa cho từ nào:
- We proceeded through a tract of country excessively wild and desolate.
- People with lanterns rushed hither and thither.
- John knew that he could spend a day very pleasantly in going over to that pasture.
All the adverbs in these sentences are called simple adverbs because they have but one office in the sentence,—they merely modify the word they go with.
Tất cả các trạng từ trong những câu này được gọi là trạng từ đơn vì chúng chỉ có một chức năng trong câu — chúng chỉ bổ nghĩa cho từ mà chúng đi kèm.
2. Adverbs Modifying the Whole Sentence
Trạng từ Bổ nghĩa cho Toàn bộ Câu
In the sentence, "Perhaps my pony can carry the load," the word perhaps tells nothing whatever about the action of carrying, but rather serves to make the whole statement doubtful. Such a word is said to modify the whole sentence. Some other adverbs used in this way are certainly, indeed, fortunately, and not.
Trong câu "Perhaps my pony can carry the load," từ perhaps không nói gì về hành động mang vác, mà chỉ làm cho toàn bộ câu nói trở nên nghi ngờ. Một từ như vậy được cho là bổ nghĩa cho toàn bộ câu. Một số trạng từ khác được sử dụng theo cách này là certainly, indeed, fortunately, và not.
The common use of the adverb not is to change an affirmative statement to a negative statement, as in the sentence, "I will not wear my heart upon my sleeve."
Cách sử dụng phổ biến của trạng từ not là thay đổi một câu khẳng định thành một câu phủ định, như trong câu "I will not wear my heart upon my sleeve."
3. Interrogative Adverbs
Trạng từ Nghi vấn
The simple adverbs, when, where, why, how, whence, whither, are used in asking questions; as, "When shall we be stronger?" "Why do you answer me so?" Such adverbs modify the whole predicate. They are called interrogative adverbs.
Các trạng từ đơn when, where, why, how, whence, whither, được sử dụng để đặt câu hỏi; như "When shall we be stronger?" "Why do you answer me so?" Những trạng từ như vậy bổ nghĩa cho toàn bộ vị ngữ. Chúng được gọi là trạng từ nghi vấn.
Note. The is sometimes used as an adverb before comparatives; as, "The more you have, the more you want."
Ghi chú. The đôi khi được sử dụng như một trạng từ trước các tính từ so sánh hơn; như "The more you have, the more you want."
4. Comparison of Adverbs
So sánh Trạng từ
When the meaning permits, adverbs may be compared in the same manner as adjectives; as, fast, faster, fastest; pleasantly, more pleasantly, most pleasantly; fortunately, less fortunately, least fortunately.
Khi ý nghĩa cho phép, trạng từ có thể được so sánh theo cùng cách với tính từ; như fast, faster, fastest; pleasantly, more pleasantly, most pleasantly; fortunately, less fortunately, least fortunately.
