1. DEFINITION.
1. ĐỊNH NGHĨA.
We have noted several constructions in which there is an ellipsis, or omission of some word or words necessary to the grammatical structure of the sentence.
Chúng ta đã lưu ý một số cấu trúc trong đó có sự tỉnh lược (ellipsis), hay sự lược bỏ một số từ cần thiết cho cấu trúc ngữ pháp của câu.
Giải thích: Câu tỉnh lược là câu bị lược bỏ một hoặc nhiều từ nhưng vẫn đủ nghĩa để người đọc/nghe hiểu. Trong tiếng Anh, tỉnh lược thường gặp trong văn nói, hội thoại và các cấu trúc so sánh.
2. COMMON CASES OF ELLIPSIS.
2. CÁC TRƯỜNG HỢP TỈNH LƯỢC THƯỜNG GẶP.
(1) The subject of an imperative sentence, the pronoun you, thou, or ye is usually omitted; as, "(You) Honor the flag."
(1) Chủ ngữ của câu mệnh lệnh, đại từ you, thou, hoặc ye thường bị lược bỏ; như "(You) Honor the flag."
(2) A noun is often omitted after a possessive modifier; as, "Let us go over to Baker's (house) this evening."
(2) Một danh từ thường bị lược bỏ sau một từ bổ nghĩa sở hữu; như "Let us go over to Baker's (house) this evening."
(3) An auxiliary verb is often omitted; as, "Somebody has entered the hall and (has) taken my umbrella."
(3) Một trợ động từ thường bị lược bỏ; như "Somebody has entered the hall and (has) taken my umbrella."
(4) The predicate is often omitted in a clause of comparison; as, "I am not so tired as you (are or are tired)." "He has no better right than I (have or have right)."
(4) Vị ngữ thường bị lược bỏ trong mệnh đề so sánh; như "I am not so tired as you (are or are tired)." "He has no better right than I (have or have right)."
(5) The relative pronoun that is often omitted in an adjective clause; as, "The ring (that) you gave me is too small."
(5) Đại từ quan hệ that thường bị lược bỏ trong mệnh đề tính từ; như "The ring (that) you gave me is too small."
(6) The subordinate conjunction that is often omitted in a noun clause; as, "You said (that) I might take your skates."
(6) Liên từ phụ thuộc that thường bị lược bỏ trong mệnh đề danh từ; như "You said (that) I might take your skates."
Giải thích: Trong các trường hợp trên, các từ bị lược bỏ có thể được thêm vào để câu hoàn chỉnh về mặt ngữ pháp. Tuy nhiên, việc lược bỏ giúp câu văn trở nên tự nhiên và không lặp từ.
3. ELLIPTICAL SENTENCES IN CONVERSATION.
3. CÂU TỈNH LƯỢC TRONG HỘI THOẠI.
The elliptical sentence is very common, especially in conversation, where we do not have to depend entirely upon words to convey our meaning, as we have the help of emphasis, tone of voice, and gesture. It follows that in oral language we leave out many words that can easily be supplied by our listeners.
Câu tỉnh lược rất phổ biến, đặc biệt trong hội thoại, nơi chúng ta không phải hoàn toàn dựa vào từ ngữ để truyền đạt ý nghĩa vì có sự hỗ trợ của nhấn mạnh, ngữ điệu và cử chỉ. Do đó, trong ngôn ngữ nói, chúng ta lược bỏ nhiều từ mà người nghe có thể dễ dàng bổ sung.
(1) In answering questions, we seldom make complete statements, as, "What is your name? (My name is) Donald. Whose boy are you? (I am) Mr. Hill's (boy). Where do you live? (I live) On Jackson Street."
(1) Khi trả lời câu hỏi, chúng ta hiếm khi trả lời đầy đủ, như "What is your name? (My name is) Donald. Whose boy are you? (I am) Mr. Hill's (boy). Where do you live? (I live) On Jackson Street."
(2) We often omit a word that has already been expressed in the sentence; as, "Our first maid was an Irish girl; our second (maid was) a Norwegian (girl)."
(2) Chúng ta thường lược bỏ một từ đã được diễn đạt trong câu; như "Our first maid was an Irish girl; our second (maid was) a Norwegian (girl)."
(3) In sentences beginning with no wonder or no matter we omit the main verb and the anticipative subject it. "No wonder he died," means "It is no wonder that he died." "No matter what I said," means "It is no matter what I said."
(3) Trong các câu bắt đầu bằng no wonder hoặc no matter, chúng ta lược bỏ động từ chính và chủ ngữ giả định it. "No wonder he died," có nghĩa là "It is no wonder that he died." "No matter what I said," có nghĩa là "It is no matter what I said."
(4) Two very common questions are "What of it?" and "What if I do?" We may expand the first question thus, "What (will come) of it?" and the second thus, "What (difference will it make) if I do?"
(4) Hai câu hỏi rất phổ biến là "What of it?" và "What if I do?" Chúng ta có thể mở rộng câu hỏi thứ nhất thành "What (will come) of it?" và câu thứ hai thành "What (difference will it make) if I do?"
(5) In adverbial clauses we find many cases of ellipsis, but the words omitted can readily be supplied; as, "I lived on the south side when (I was) a child." "I cut my finger while (I was) paring an apple." "She sings as if (she were singing) by note." "I will be there if (it is) possible." "Though (we were) tired and hungry we plodded on." "I will go (though it) rain or (though it) shine."
(5) Trong các mệnh đề trạng ngữ, chúng ta tìm thấy nhiều trường hợp tỉnh lược, nhưng các từ bị lược bỏ có thể dễ dàng được bổ sung; như "I lived on the south side when (I was) a child." "I cut my finger while (I was) paring an apple." "She sings as if (she were singing) by note." "I will be there if (it is) possible." "Though (we were) tired and hungry we plodded on." "I will go (though it) rain or (though it) shine."
Giải thích: Tỉnh lược trong hội thoại là cách nói tự nhiên, giúp tiết kiệm thời gian và tránh lặp từ. Người nghe dựa vào ngữ cảnh để hiểu ý nghĩa đầy đủ. Trong văn viết học thuật, tỉnh lược được sử dụng hạn chế hơn.
