If you want to become famous on YouTube, you should make lots of videos and release one every day. YouTubers who become popular are often those who present tips, advice, 'how to' guides and opinions on entertainment or stories in the news. If you allow advertisements in your videos, you will make money when people view the adverts. Facebook is a good platform for those who want to make money, but not for those who want to be famous. To earn money through Facebook, you need a very original and/or funny page, with interesting photos which can get you a few hundred thousand 'likes'. If you achieve fame on Facebook, it probably won't last.
Twitter is a social media site where people can communicate through short messages. It works well for those who want to be well-known but are not so interested in making money. If you want to become known on Twitter, you will need to post lots of entertaining content. Instagram is a site where people mainly put up photos and videos. It is a site which can make you ,well-known, particularly if you want to become a famous photographer.


07. Read the instructions and statements and look at the passage 'Becoming rich and famous through the internet' again. Then follow the steps in the box below and complete the task.

Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer of the passage 'Become rich and famous through the internet'? Write

When you have found the part of the text which contains the answer, read every word carefully. Sometimes a small word can change the meaning completely. For example, if the writer says people are 'too friendly', the positive adjective 'friendly' becomes negative.
  • Read each statement carefully. The statements come in the order of the text.
  • Sometimes you will need to read the whole passage quickly to decide; for other statements you only need to read a sentence or two.
  • Remember the statement might not use exactly the same words as in the passage.
YES if the statement agrees with the claims of the writer
NO if the statement contradicts the claims of the writer
NOT GIVEN if it is impossible to soy what the writer thinks about this

1. Before the internet, you didn't need any special skills to become famous.
2. If you choose a specialist subject, you are more likely to get known.
3. Having your own blog is an excellent way to find fame.

08. Check your answers, and the reasons for them, in the notes below.

You should be able to tell from the statement which part of the text to read in order to find the answer. If you can't answer Yes or No for that part of the text, the answer is Not Given. You do not need to continue searching in the rest of the text.

1. The answer is at the beginning of the text: In the past, to become famous you needed a 'talent', another way of saying 'special skills'. The text states that it is now easier to become famous 'because of the internet'. So the answer is No.

2. Specialist subjects are mentioned in the second paragraph, along with other possible things to write about. The writer does not say if writing about a specialist subject is more likely to make you famous than writing about the other topics mentioned (comedy, sport, etc.), so the answer is Not Given.

3. To answer this, you only need to read the last paragraph, about biogs. The writer states that blogs are possibly the best way to become internet famous. This is the same as saying that blogs are an excellent way to become famous, so the answer is Yes.

09. Now follow the same steps for statements 4 to 6.

5. It is not worth the effort needed to get famous through Twitter.
6. Learning to make 'vines' could help you, if you are aiming to become famous,so the answer is Yes.
