Vocabulary Skill -ly Adverbs

In the passage, you saw the words quickly and poorly. These are adverbs. They tell us how something is done. Many adverbs end in -ly.

A. Read the sentences.

Slow and quick are adjectives. Add -ly to make an adverb.
Bill is a slow(adj.) eater.
Bill eats slowly(adv.).
Jane is a quick(adj.) thinker.
Jane thinks quickly(adv.).
( Look at the change in spelling. )
The girl is happy(adj.). She's smiling.
The girl is smiling happily(adv.).

B. Complete the chart with the adverbs. Pay attention to the spelling.

C. In each sentence, write the correct word.

  1. Eva is speaking (loud /loudly) . Everyone can hear her.
