Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 1 (Fiction 2 - Historical Fiction)

The Ugly Boy

Abe was taller than any kid his age. He had long, bony fingers, and he had a big nose and big ears. “You’re ugly!” the other kids cried.
Abe looked in the mirror. He felt sad, because he did not look like the other boys. “I am ugly,” he said. “No one will ever love me.”
As he grew older, Abe read book after book. He learned about the world. Finally, he asked a pretty woman named Mary to be his wife. She knew how smart Abe was. “I will marry you,” she said.
Then, Abe became president of the United States. He was a good and kind man. People liked his big nose and ears. Artists wanted to sculpt his face out of clay. They wanted to paint him. All over the country, people loved Abe Lincoln.
