Kat’s Poem

Katharine Bates looked out the window of the train. There was the tallest mountain she had ever seen. “Pike’s Peak,” she said. “Amazing.”
Kat loved to write. She wrote books about travel, books for kids, and short stories. When she got back to her home, she wrote a poem about the mountain. This poem would make her famous.
“Look at Kat’s poem in the newspaper!” a man said to his friend.
“It is beautiful!” the friend said.
People liked Kat’s poem so much that they put it to music. “For purple mountain’s majesty,” they sang.
Kat’s poem became the song called “America the Beautiful.” We still sing her words today. When you sing them, remember Kat!
