The Stray Cat

One day, Ann walked home from school. A cat began to follow her. He had long black fur. He did not wear a collar or a nametag. She picked him up, and he purred.
“Please, may I keep this cat?” Ann asked her parents.
“What if he belongs to someone?” they said.
Mom called the animal shelter to find out if anyone had lost a black cat. Dad put up “Found Cat” signs and took the cat to the vet for a checkup. Ann carried the cat from door to door. “Do you know this cat?” she asked.
“No,” said everyone. “We don’t know who he belongs to.” No one at the shelter had lost a black cat. No one called about the “Found Cat” signs. Ann took care of the cat for two weeks. She fed the cat and gave him water. Finally, her parents said the magic words: “The cat is yours, Ann!”
