The Lie

Lisa always told the truth. “I will not tell a lie,” she said. But one day, she didn’t know
what to do.
She and her friend Jan went shopping with their fathers. Jan found a
sweater. “I love it,” she cried. “Don’t you love it, too, Lisa?”
The sweater was bright yellow. It was fuzzy like a baby duck’s
down.
It had a big orange balloon on the front. Lisa thought it was ugly.
She didn’t want to hurt Jan.
She looked at the sweater. She thought about what to say. She did
not want to tell a lie. Finally, she said, “It is very bright. It looks soft.
I’m glad that you love it.”
Jan bought the sweater. She wore it a lot. Lisa was a good friend.
She never said the sweater was ugly, and she never told a lie.
