The Slow Elephant

In Africa many animals ran fast. Giraffe ran 30 miles an hour. Lion ran 50 miles an hour. Cheetah ran 70 miles an hour. Elephant could run, but he was slow. “Why can’t I be fast?” Elephant cried to Monkey.

“Slow and steady, you see things that fast animals don’t,” said Monkey. “Wait and see.”

One day, the animals met around the water hole. They talked and laughed. Suddenly, they heard a loud “Squeak!” They were scared. They ran as fast as they could.

Elephant tried to catch up. He huffed and puffed, but his legs would not run fast. He had time to look around him. Then, he saw a tiny mouse. “Squeak!” said Mouse. Elephant laughed and laughed.

Monkey nodded from the tree. “You may be slow,” he said, “but you see things clearly!”
