Rita’s Flight

Rita loved birds. When she found a hurt crow, she cared for it until it was well. She hung bird feeders from her trees. She put birdbaths full of water in her backyard.

But Rita was sad. “I wish I could fly,” she said to herself. A Robin nearby heard Rita’s wish. He went to the other birds.

“Rita is good to us,” Robin said. “Can we help her fly?”

“But we’re so small,” said Crow. “What can we do?”

The birds came up with a plan. One day, Rita stood outside tossing seed for the birds. Suddenly, two Golden Eagles swooped down. They caught Rita gently under her arms and flew up to the sky with her. For hours, they flew her all over the town and the hills. Rita never forgot that flight, and she never forgot to put food out for the birds.
