The Food Chain

All animals and plants need food in order to live. They eat each other. This is called the food chain.

A chain is made up of links. Links connect animals and plants. The weakest link in a chain is a plant. This is often eaten by stronger links like deer and horses.

Each link in the food chain is food for the next link. A rabbit eats grass. A coyote eats the rabbit. A cougar eats a coyote. This is the food chain.

People are a link in the food chain, too. The next time you eat a hamburger, think about how it fits into the food chain!
