The Bald Eagle

Did you know that our national bird might have been a turkey? Our leaders wanted a
bird to stand for America. Ben Franklin said the turkey would be a good symbol.
Some people wanted the bald eagle. They said
that the eagle was brave and strong. They felt
that the eagle was free, just like America.
Ben said the bald eagle stole fish from other
birds. He said they flew away when small birds
fought them. He liked the turkey.
Ben lost the vote. But what if he had won? It
would be funny to see a turkey on our money
and stamps!
