Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 2 (Fiction 1 - Fairy Tales and Folklore)

Essie and the Parrots

It was a hot day. The sun was shining on the trees. All the leaves were bright green. Mother Parrot, Father Parrot, and Baby Parrot wanted to take a walk. They packed a lunch and went to the park.

Essie was a little girl. She had red hair, and her legs were short. She liked to find new things. That morning, she was taking a walk.

“What is this I see?” she said. “It looks like a pretty little house. It is painted green. It has vines on the windows. It has a blue door. I think I will go in.”

Essie knocked on the door. She pushed it open and went in. The house was empty. It had three green chairs. There were three stools in the kitchen. Three beds were upstairs. Three glasses of juice were in the kitchen.

The tallest glass was too big. The medium-sized glass was too sweet. The baby glass tasted just right. She drank it all up.

Essie was tired. She walked upstairs. The big bed was too lumpy. The medium bed was too soft. The baby bed was just right. Essie pulled up the covers and went right to sleep.
