“I Have a Dream”
Cindy lived in Maine. She had black hair and brown eyes. She had lots of friends. All
of her friends did not look the same. Cindy did not think about the color of their skin.
She liked her friends because they were fun, and they were nice.
At school her teacher was talking about people. She said, “A long time ago people
could not be friends if they were not the same color. They could not eat at the same
place. They could not drink out of the same water fountains. They could not go to the
same schools.”
Cindy was thinking hard. She started to dream.
A black man was standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
He was talking. People were clapping. They were cheering. It was 1963. It was a hot
day, and Cindy could feel the warm air.
She stepped closer. She heard him say, “I have a dream today." He said it was a
dream that all people could be kind and fair to each other.
Cindy clapped and cheered. She smiled at the girl next to her. On the steps was
Martin Luther King, Jr.
