Toll House Cookies
In 1930, Tim and his family were staying at an inn for the night. The inn was called the
Toll House Inn.
Mrs. Wakefield was baking cookies. She and Ken owned the inn.
Mrs. Wakefield asked Tim, “Would you like to help me make cookies?”
“Sure,” said Tim. “What can I do?”
“You can mix the dough,” she said.
“I am good at mixing. I help my mom all of the time.”
“Oh, dear,” she said. “I am out of baking chocolate. What will I do?”
Tim watched as Mrs. Wakefield took out a bar of chocolate. She cut it into little pieces.
“What are you going to do with that candy bar?” asked Tim.
“I am making it into chunks,” she said.
“Why are you going to do that? Why not just eat the chocolate?” asked Tim.
“I am going to try something new. It will be a test. We will see how it turns out,” she
said.
“Okay,” said Tim, as he mixed in the pieces.
Mrs. Wakefield put scoops of the cookie dough onto a cookie sheet. She put it into the
oven to bake.
When the cookies came out, she looked surprised. “This is new.”
Tim took a big bite. “Yummy!” said Tim. “What are these cookies called?”
“I think I will call them Toll House cookies,” she said.
“That is a good name,” said Tim. “I think I would like another Toll House cookie,
please!”
