The Horseless Carriage

In 1896, Verland and his sister, Marie, lived in Detroit, Michigan. One day, they were
playing marbles in front of their home.
Suddenly, Verland stood up, “Hey, Sis! Look! Look!”
Marie stood up and looked. She saw a funny-looking carriage rolling down the dirt
road. It made a “putt-putt” noise.
“What is it?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” Verland said.
“How is it moving? Where are the horses?” asked Marie.
“I don’t know,” said Verland.
The carriage went past them slowly. It made a strange noise. “Putt. Putt. Putt.” It was
black and had four big wheels. A man was sitting inside. He was holding a big wheel
in his hand. The strange thing stopped at the end of the street. The children ran all
the way to the carriage.
“Hey, Mister! What are you riding in?” they asked.
“It’s a horseless carriage,” said the man.
“How does it move?” asked Marie.
“It moves with an engine, but does not use horses,”
said the man.
“Wow!” said the two children.
“Who made it?” they asked.
“I did,” said the man.
“Who are you?” they asked.
“I am Henry Ford.”
