Life Savers

Clarence Crane made chocolates. He had his own shop. It was 1912.

One day he was working. “I want to make candy that will not melt in the summer,” he told his wife.

“That is a good idea,” she said. “I think you should try to make a new kind of candy.” Clarence worked and worked. He mixed up white sugar. He added this. He added that. He put in a drop of peppermint.

“Let me taste,” said his wife. She took a bite. “This is good. Why don’t you put it into your machine? I will turn the handle.”

“Let’s see what it will look like,” said Clarence. He put it in the machine. He turned the handle. It made a hole in the center of the white, sweet candy.

“It looks like a life preserver from the Titanic,” said his wife.
“It is missing the red stripes,” said Clarence.
“It is too small for a mouse!” she said. “But, it does look good. What will we call it?”
“I think we should call it a Life Saver™,” he said. “What do you think, dear?”
“I think that is a good idea. It is time for me to have a Life Saver, don’t you think?” she asked. He handed one to her and they both smiled.
