Ore Boat on the Great Lakes

It was the summer or 1953. George just got a job on a big boat. The boat ran on the Great Lakes. It went from Wisconsin to Ohio every three days. The boat took many things back and forth.

George and his friend, Petey, both got jobs on the ship.

“Hey, George, what job did you get?” asked Petey.
“The captain says I am to work as a deck hand,” said George.
“I am going to work in the engine room,” said Petey. “I think I would like it better outside. I am not sure I want to stay in a room with a lot of noise.”
“It will be okay,” said George. “We can read books when we get off work. They have a library. They have a mess hall too. The food looks very good. I think I want to eat five times a day.”
“Good luck with that! I want to paint the ship and clean the deck. I want to tie the ship up when we get into port. I want to clean the hold of the ship,” said Petey.
“You need to talk to the boss. I think you have the wrong job,” said George. “Maybe we could trade.”
“I think that would be great,” said Petey. “I need the fresh sea air. I need to stretch my legs. You are good with engines, and you can fix anything that breaks. You are the man for the job!”
They laughed. It was time to talk to the captain and see if they could swap jobs.
