Party

My name is Chris. Today is my birthday. I am eight years old. My mom is planning a party after school. We will have blue balloons and blue ice cream. All of the games have blue prizes, and I want to get a blue bike with shiny handles.

The day is going slowly. I keep watching the clock. It is only 9:00 A.M. That is when we have math. I love math. It makes me think of my birthday. Two dollars, plus four dollars, plus six dollars is twelve dollars. I will get that much money from my sisters. Three balloons and seven balloons make ten balloons. There are thirteen balloons in all. Six party hats and . . . .

“Chris, can you come to the board and do the math problem?”
“What did you say, Miss D? Are you talking to me?”
“Yes, Chris, I wanted you to add the numbers on the board?”
“Do they have chocolate cake or games? Do they have balloons or bikes?”
“Chris, what are you talking about? I want you to add six and eleven on the board.”
“I’m sorry, Miss D. I guess I was thinking about my birthday. It is today.”
“Right, Chris. We remembered. Your mom is bringing cake at 3:00. Remember?”
“I remember.”
“Guess it is time to get back to math. What do you think, Chris?”
“I think you are right. I can think about the party later!”
