Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 2 (Fiction 5 - Fantasy)

Arnie the Ant

Arnie the ant woke up one rainy day. The water was dripping outside his window. Drip. Drip. Drip.
Today was the big day at the fair. All of his friends were going.
Sammy, Frannie, and Janie would be there. They had planned to eat popcorn. They had planned to eat cotton candy.
Drip. Drip. Drip. He pulled the blanket back over his head.
“That rain had to spoil everything.”
Rrrrrring. Rrrrrring. It was the phone. Arnie hopped up to get it. He put on his slippers.
“Hello.”
“Hello, Arnie. It’s me, Sammy. Did you see the rain?”
“I did, and it makes me mad.”
“I have an idea. It is not raining in the desert.”
“Okay.”
“So, let’s pack a lunch and go to the desert. We can climb on the hills. Frannie and Janie could bring their bikes. We could eat chicken. It would be warm.”
“What a great idea. Can you call the others?”
“I will. We will pick you up in an hour,” said Sammy.
“Okay,” said Arnie, “but if it stops raining, let’s go to the fair tomorrow.”
