Mr. Cat
Mr. Cat had a store. He sold candy and ice cream. The store had paper and cans. It
had chicken and ham. It had everything you needed.
All the children in the neighborhood came to buy things from him. They came to see
Mr. Cat. All of the children loved him. He would smile and say nice things.
He always wore a tall hat. The hat was green. It had a black ribbon on top. It had
seven blue buttons on the side. They were put on with glue.
Every day children would bring him new things for his hat. He had a feather from
Mattie and a stone from Jenny. Emily gave him a pencil, and Stuart gave him a piece
of gum. He glued everything on his hat.
One night his hat fell off his head. It fell on the floor. It was too heavy. It had too many
things. Mr. Cat sat and cried.
“What will I do?” he asked the children.
“I have an idea,” said Kacey. “I think you should put the hat on the wall. Buy a new hat
and glue on more things. You could have many hats. You could keep them on the wall
for everyone to see.”
“What a great idea,” said Mr. Cat. “That is just what I will do.”
