Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 2 (Fiction 5 - Fantasy)

Vanishing Veggies

Tuesdays are strange at my house. My mom doesn’t think so, but I know that it is true.

Every day my mom always fixes dinner. She always fixes me veggies. She always makes me eat beans. She makes me eat corn. She makes me eat carrots. They are veggies, and I hate veggies.

Every night she puts the veggies on my plate. But for some strange reason, on Tuesdays they just disappear. They just go away a little at a time. I do not know where they go, but they go. I wiggle my nose. Some veggies go away. I clap my hands. A few more veggies go away. I smile at my mom, and even more veggies go away.

My mom gets mad. She says, “Sarah, where are your veggies?”

I smile, “They are gone, Mom. They have disappeared.”
“Where did they go?”
“I do not know where they went. They just went away.”
She says, “Well then, I will have to give you some more.”
I say, “That is okay. Today is Tuesday, and they will just go away. Give me more, Mom!”
Mom gives me more, and they start to go away. My mother does not see them disappear. I cannot see where they go.
She says, “Tuesdays are so strange. I think we will eat fruit on Tuesdays.”
“I love fruit,” I said. “Tuesdays will be the best days of all!”
