Dolley Madison

Dolley Madison was born in 1731. She had two children, but one day her husband died. Dolley had many friends. One day her friend had her meet James Madison. He was 17 years older than Dolley. He asked her to be his wife, and she said, “Yes.” It was a happy day for Dolley and James.

James Madison ran for president, and he won the race. They moved into the White House, and Dolley became the new first lady. She knew just what to do. She made the White House a happy place. That was her job. Dolley was always kind, and people liked her very much. Every week she gave parties. She made things look nice. She got new dishes. Dolley painted the walls. Things looked great. James and Dolley worked hard to make things happen.

One day a war came. Dolley would not leave. The White House was on fire, and smoke was in the air. The chairs were on fire, and the walls were burning. She saw the painting of George Washington on the wall. She grabbed it and ran. The painting was saved. James was so proud of her!

Dolley Madison was a hero. She was very brave.
