Babe Ruth

Even though Babe Ruth was born many years ago, in 1895, you may know something about him. His full name was George Herman Ruth. When he was a child, Babe's mother and father could not care for him, so they sent him to a place with other children—an orphanage. As a child, Babe had to work very hard. He had to do many chores, and he had to go to school at the same time.

Babe liked to play ball. He was on the school team, and he became the best hitter. He was also the best pitcher.

When he grew up, Babe became a baseball player. He was on three teams. He played for the Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves. His coach called him “Babe.”

Babe hit 60 home runs in one year. It was the most home runs until 1961. He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Babe Ruth was a great ballplayer!
