Harriet Tubman

One lady did great things! Her real name was Araminta. People know her as Harriet Tubman. Others called her Moses.

She was born a slave in 1820. Life was hard for her. It was hard for her family. They were slaves. They had to work long hours. They had to pick cotton. Their house was a shack. It was very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. When she was a teen, she ran away. They did not catch her. She ran to the North. There were no slaves up there.

She got a job working for the army. She was a nurse. She was a soldier, and she was a scout.

Harriet also helped other slaves get away from the South. She ran the Underground Railroad. It was not a train. She was the conductor, but she did not have a train.

She helped runaways. She helped them find places to hide. Other people helped her. They gave the slaves food. She led them north to the land where they could be free.

Harriet was a hero. She was brave and she helped others.
