Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 3 (Fiction 5 - Fantasy)

Life of a Flower

Poppy Flower was born in a large flower patch on the edge of the town of Rose View. Her parents were Daisy and Sweet William.

From the moment she was born, she grew like a weed. She grew to her full height very fast. Her leaves were vibrant green, and her petals were the brightest shade of orange anyone had ever seen.

Before long, all her friends started calling her “Fireball” because her colors were so bright. Poppy often spent her days painting and was brilliant with an artist’s paintbrush. Poppy painted picture after picture, selling them to galleries across the nation.

By the time she was four, she had been featured in Flower Power and Flower Time magazines. All the magazines wanted to do articles on her, even the gossip magazines. Photographers followed her everywhere.

Although Poppy was tired of the attention, she would still chat politely and sign autographs for all her fans. Her popularity grew and grew.

One day she received an official-looking envelope in the mail. The return address said it was from the White House. Poppy’s leaves trembled as she opened it.

Dear Poppy,
For quite some time I have admired your paintings. I was wondering if you would paint a picture for me? I would like to have a picture of wildflowers hanging in the Oval Office.
Sincerely,
Mr. President

Poppy smiled. She knew she would paint her best picture ever.
