SUPER GIRL

I was in the grocery store one day with my sister, Flora. As we pushed the cart down the snack aisle, I stopped to grab some beef jerky. She picked up some potato chips.

“Fauna,” she said. “I’m going to get the fruits and veggies. Do you want to get the meat and then find me in the produce section?”

“Sure,” I said, and I wandered off to find steak and lobster. When I was done, I rolled the cart down to the opposite end of the store. As I rounded the corner of the fruit section, I saw an incredible sight. I could only stare with my mouth wide open.

A giant carrot was holding a banana hostage. The store manager was trying to calm him down and get him to release the banana. As the carrot became more and more irritated, he tightened his hold on the banana’s neck. The store manager yelled, “Stop! You’ll bruise him!”

“Not half as bad as he will bruise if you don’t give me what I want,” the carrot said with an evil grin. “I’m looking for a getaway truck—one with a full tank of gas and a refrigerated trailer. If you don’t get it for me in 30 minutes, Mr. Banana here gets squished.”

Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Flora dive into the lettuce cooler. She twisted and spun in a circle. The cooler door opened and out popped Super Girl.

I gulped in surprise. For months I had watched Super Girl save the city. I had no idea it was Flora.

“Flora,” I gasped.

“Shhhh, keep it to yourself,” she said. “There’s a banana in danger, and he must be saved. If I don’t act quickly, he will be bruised beyond recognition.”

Silently, I stepped aside. “Super Girl to the rescue,” I said with admiration.
