Scrambled Eggs

It was common practice for three coyotes to sneak into the farmer’s henhouse to steal the eggs at night. Each coyote would bring a basket in which to carry the eggs, except for one. This coyote would bring only one egg home at a time. He made multiple trips back and forth to the henhouse and his den. The other coyotes thought this was quite funny. They made fun of this coyote, calling him a slow poke.

“You are a foolish coyote,” cried the leader. “Wouldn’t it be much easier to make just one trip?”

The coyote ignored the others and continued with his pattern. One night, the farmer got wind of the fact that the coyotes were the ones stealing the eggs. The slow coyote started early in the evening and gathered an egg and returned home. He made two more trips before he saw a light go on in the farmhouse.

The other coyotes were coming by at this time to make their only trip. They quickly loaded their baskets and ran. But it was too late. The farmer chased them, and they dropped all of their baskets. The eggs cracked and broke all over the place.

It was a hungry morning the next day as none of the coyotes had any breakfast—that is, except for the slow coyote. He had plenty of eggs, as he had made plenty of trips. He kindly shared his egg breakfast with the rest of the pack.
