The Field Day

It was a tradition to spend the last day of school participating in a “field day.” Eric had been picked to be the anchor of the boys’ relay. He couldn’t imagine why he was picked for that position. Just the thought of it made him sick.

The long jumpers were busy at work, running, jumping, falling, and laughing. Eric wondered why he couldn’t do a simple event like that. There didn’t seem to be an ounce of pressure. He took another walk around the track to calm down.

Before long, it was time to race. Eric met with his team and began stretching out. He was so nervous that he thought he would be sick. After stretching, Eric jogged a casual lap around the track. The announcer called for the runners, and Eric’s team found their places on the track.

Moments later, the announcer’s gun fired into the air. The race was on. Zoom! The racers flew around the track. One of Eric’s teammates was racing towards him with the baton.

Eric grasped the baton tightly in his grip and raced toward the finish line. He could feel sweat spraying off of his forehead. Was he going to make it? Before Eric knew what the result was, he was scooped up into the air on his teammates’ shoulders. They had done it! Eric smiled and happened to glance over at the long jumpers. He couldn’t believe the thought that came to his mind. He thought, “That looks awfully boring.”
