Haunted Halloween

It was Halloween, and Miriam wanted to do something different this year. She was tired of going trickor-treating. She wanted to do something exciting, something that seemed more grown up. Her brother Brett had told her about a haunted house at the top of the hill. Miriam had decided that this would be the Halloween that they checked it out.

Miriam met with her friends Pam and Ellie at exactly 8:00 P.M. They walked uphill towards the house. Miriam led the way slowly up the steps to the old house. The girls pressed the doorbell and took a step back. What if someone answered the door? What if no one did? They tried to gather their courage together.

Miriam jumped as the door opened all by itself. She stared at Pam and Ellie, who looked like a pair of ghosts. The curtains were flowing in the wind. The entryway was covered with dust. Miriam took a step forward.

“Come in,” a voice boomed. Miriam was scared. Should she leave now? If she did, her brother would think she was a chicken.

Miriam took another step forward. She was shaking with fear. Just then, the voice shouted, “COME IN!” Miriam jumped! All of a sudden, a figure jumped out. Miriam screamed and ran for the door. Something grabbed her arm.

“Miriam! Stop, it’s me!” Brett called.

Miriam whirled around to see her brother laughing. She couldn’t believe it! Yes, it had indeed been a different Halloween.
