Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 4 (Fiction 3 - Contemporary Realistic Fiction)

Friends in the Morning

Samantha was not a morning person. Every morning when her mom called, she’d snuggle down under the blankets for a few more minutes. She would stay there until her mom came to get her. She knew that this annoyed her mom and that her mom would come yell at her, but Samantha felt like the extra minutes of comfort and warmth were well worth it.

Then one morning, Samantha woke up and listened. She wondered what time it was. She figured it must not be time to get up yet, so she snuggled back down under the covers. Silence. Samantha began to wonder why she was awake. She began wondering again what time it was. She flipped off the covers and looked at the clock. It read 7:30. She was going to be late! She jumped out of bed and threw on her clothes. Where was her mom? Why hadn’t she woken her up?

Samantha ran downstairs to see her parents sitting at the breakfast table drinking their coffee calmly.

“What’s going on?” asked Samantha. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”

“Oh, I did,” replied her mom. “You just chose to stay in bed.”

“Mom, is this one of those ‘I’m trying to teach you a lesson’ moments?”

“Is it working?” Mom asked.

A gift was sitting on the breakfast table.

“What’s this?” asked Samantha.

“It’s your new best friend,” answered Mom. Samantha unwrapped an alarm clock. A smile crept over her face.
