Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 4 (Fiction 4 - Mystery/Suspense/Adventure)

The Treasure

It was a hot, sunny day in June when Miranda and Jessica, who had recently become friends, were exploring in the vacant lot at the end of the street. Miranda had lived her whole life in this neighborhood, but Jessica had moved in just two months ago. The vacant lot was filled with wild flowers, weeds, and litter. Miranda and Jessica were hoping to find something exciting to cure their boredom.

“Hey! Look at this!” called Miranda.

“What is it?” asked Jessica.

“It looks like a message.”

Jessica hurried to catch up with Miranda. Miranda was peering over a tattered piece of paper. Her eyes got bigger and bigger as she read.

“What does it say?” asked Jessica.

“It says that a treasure was buried here! I just can’t believe it!” exclaimed Miranda. The girls screamed excitedly and began to follow the directions written in the letter. The first clue sent them to the back of the lot. From there, they found another clue that sent them to the garbage cans. Under the biggest garbage can was another note. Miranda and Jessica just couldn’t believe it. Things were falling into place too easily.

They were right. In the midst of reading another clue, Jason jumped out from behind the garbage can laughing. The girls were mad! They took off screaming and tried to catch Jason.
