Here Comes the Dog!

Alex was so excited to ride his new bike to school in the morning. He had just received the bike for his birthday, but he had never ridden it to school. Alex’s friend, Bo, promised to meet him on the corner so that they could ride together.

Alex got ready for bed. He could hardly sleep. He wondered why he felt so nervous. He had walked this path hundreds of times, but riding a bike was different. There was a section of busy traffic that was a bit dangerous.

The next morning, Alex was up bright and early. He gulped down his oatmeal at breakfast and kissed his mom goodbye before she had a chance to ask any questions. He snapped on his bike helmet and pulled the bike out of the garage.

Off in the distance, Alex could see Bo. Alex took a deep breath and hopped on. As Bo rode past, Alex pushed his pedals to catch up. It was going to be a great day.

Just then, a blur raced right out in front of Alex. He froze and slammed on the brakes. Before Alex could stop, he hit the blur, sailed through the air, and landed on the hard cement. Alex groaned as he tried to raise his arm. He knew it was probably broken. What was that? Was it a speed bump? Just then, Mrs. Kroeger’s little dog began licking Alex’s face. Alex smiled when he realized what the blur really was.
