Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 4 (Fiction 4 - Mystery/Suspense/Adventure)

The Peeping Tom

Samantha was excited to have all of her friends coming over for a slumber party after school that day. She had been waiting all week for the big day. Just as the last bell rang at school, Samantha hopped on her bike and pedaled home.

Samantha’s mom greeted her at the door. Her mom had decorated the kitchen with balloons and crepe paper. This was going to be an awesome party. Before long, the pizza was delivered and the girls were beginning to show up.

After dinner, the girls went downstairs to watch a video. The video was in full swing when Samantha noticed something unusual going on outside. She slowly crawled to the window and peered outside.

“What are you doing, Sam?” asked Amy.

“Just looking,” replied Samantha. “It looks like there is a person in the vacant house next door.”

“Stop it! You are freaking me out!” commented Aubrey. She was always afraid of everything.

“I’m being serious!” said Samantha. She opened the curtains wide for all the girls to see. The girls were stunned to see a pair of eyes staring back at them from next door.

“Ahhhh!” they all screamed, and they went running upstairs.

“Mom! There is a creepy man next door! He’s staring at us!” yelled Samantha.

“Oh. That must be our new neighbor, Mr. Jones,” answered Mom calmly. “He just moved in today.”

Samantha’s breathing slowly calmed down. She was going to have to think of something neighborly that she could do to make up for her rudeness. But for now, she was content to finish her movie and eat some more popcorn.
