Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 4 (Fiction 4 - Mystery/Suspense/Adventure)

The Mysterious Mail

Each day, Clara checked the mail for a letter from her Aunt Jill. Aunt Jill was her favorite aunt, and each summer she got to spend a week with her in Colorado. Clara knew it was time for the letter to arrive listing the details of her pending trip, but there was nothing from Aunt Jill in the mailbox today.

But there was something: a letter with Clara’s name on it—her first name only. It was written in creepy handwriting. It was the third letter like it to come in three days, but Clara was too afraid to open the letters. Clara was starting to get worried. She brought the mail into the house and hollered upstairs to her mom that the mail was in.

“Did I get anything?” called her mother.

“No, but I did,” answered Clara.

“Is it another one of those weird letters?” asked Mom.

“It is, and I’m getting sick of it. This is getting scary,” stated Clara.

There was a letter like that in the mailbox for the next two days. Clara was getting scared. Was it from a stalker? Clara couldn’t imagine who it could be.

The next morning Clara got a phone call from her Aunt Jill. She was so excited.

“Hi, Clara,” said Aunt Jill. “Have you been getting my letters?”

“That’s just it, Aunt Jill,” said Clara, “You haven’t sent any!”

“I’ve sent you one every day for the past week!” stated Aunt Jill.

Just then the light bulb went off in Clara’s head and she began laughing and laughing.
