Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 4 (Fiction 4 - Mystery/Suspense/Adventure)

The Secret Friend

Someone knew Allison’s name. She couldn’t believe it. Here she was at her new school for less than an hour, and someone was calling her name. There must be some mistake! Allison slammed her locker shut and ducked into the crowd. She wanted to see who was calling her. It was hard enough to be the new kid, but to have a stalker, too!

A few feet away, Allison stepped behind a locker. A tall, thin girl with curly hair was calling her name. Allison didn’t have a clue who she was. She slipped into class. She had to think about this.

After class, Allison stepped into the hallway again. She couldn’t believe it when she heard her name again. She slipped into another classroom and watched as the girl walked by. Who was she? Allison had some detective work to do.

At lunch, Allison was eating alone. She was thinking about her friends back home and began feeling lonely.

The tall, thin girl walked up to her table. “Hi. I’m Angie,” the girl said. “I’m your secret pal. I’ve been trying to catch up with you all day! I wanted to make sure you had at least one friend today.”

Allison couldn’t believe it. She had been dodging her new best friend all morning. “Wow. Thanks,” said Allison. “Why don’t you call me Ally, like my friends do?” Suddenly, Ally didn’t feel so lonely anymore. Instead, a sheepish smile crossed her face as she thought about how silly she had been.
