Puppy Love

It wasn’t the prettiest dog around, but it was a puppy. No matter the breed, a puppy is always cute. Gretchen had wanted a dog for as long as she could remember, but her parents had always said no.

This time was different. The puppy had been hanging around their house for two days. It whimpered and seemed hungry. On the second night, Gretchen fed it some of her hot dog. It hadn’t left her side since.

The next morning, Gretchen’s parents called the pound and reported the missing puppy. They were told that if no one claimed the puppy in 72 hours, the puppy could be theirs. They didn’t seem too worried. They knew the owner would show up.

Two days went by without a call. On the third day, it happened. Everyone froze. Gretchen’s father answered the phone. Whew! It wasn’t the pound. Thirty minutes later, the phone rang again.

Gretchen gasped for air. It was someone selling soaps. Late in the evening, the phone rang again. This time it was the pound.

The owner showed up at Gretchen’s house the next morning. Gretchen hadn’t slept at all that night. She couldn’t believe it was over. But the owner asked if the family would be interested in adopting the puppy. Gretchen couldn’t believe her ears. This was the last pup in the litter. They had been trying to find an owner. The smile on her parents’ faces made Gretchen realize that she was the proud owner of little Miracle.
