Alarming Discovery
The alarm went off at 5:00 A.M like it did every morning. Megan rolled over and tried to open her eyes. Was it morning already? She practically fell off the bed and threw her legs in her jeans. It was a cold morning. She buttoned up her winter coat and headed outside.
Megan fed her cow each morning this early so that she could catch the school bus into town. Last summer, Megan’s father had given her a cow of her very own. The cow had not been feeling well, so Megan was feeding it hay.
Megan grabbed a bale of hay and hauled it over to the pen. Daisy the cow was going to be happy this morning. The sun was far from up, yet she was already getting her breakfast. Megan tossed the bale of hay up to the fence post and leaned over to gently drop it down.
Megan was just about to get the next bale when she stopped dead in her tracks. The pen was empty, and the fence was broken. In a panic Megan searched the barn, calling Daisy’s name. She was nowhere to be found. Megan’s search continued for another 20 minutes.
Just past the cottonwood tree, Megan heard a noise. She turned back to get a second look. To her amazement, there on the ground sat Daisy . . . and her new baby calf. Megan just sat on the ground and laughed. This was going to be a crazy day!
