Racing for Friendship

Jeff and Kirk were racing down the hill on their mountain bikes. They’d been on the trail numerous times before. They took turns winning the race. Kyle and Greg were at the base of the hill waiting to see who would make it first this time.

At the curve of the hill, a deer was waiting by the side of the road. It heard the noise from the boys. It was trying to decide whether or not it should find another place to hide.

As Jeff and Kirk were speeding down, Kirk let out a whoop and a holler. It was just enough to scare the deer, and it leaped onto the road—right in front of the racing boys. Was it all over? This was going to be bad.

The look on Jeff’s face showed that this was not going to be good. In a split second, Jeff veered sharply to the right, just missing the deer and skidding to a stop. This left just enough room for Kirk to race on down the mountain.

He couldn’t stop for quite a while. In fact, when he crossed the imaginary finish line, Kyle and Greg were there to cheer him on.

“You’re the winner,” they cried! “You did it!”

Kirk was panting and trying to catch his breath. When he finally got his words out he said, “No boys. The winner is still up there on that mountain. When he gets down, let’s give him a big cheer.”
