Daily Warm-Ups Reading - Grade 5 (Fiction 1 - Fairy Tales/Folklore)

Stick Together

There once were four bulls that lived in a field. They were only concerned about one thing.

Occasionally, a lion would creep around the field stalking them. The bulls were worried that the lion would kill them, and so they had a discussion about what they should do.

One of the bulls suggested that they attack the lion and kill him. But the other bulls agreed that the lion was much stronger than any one of them and was a much better fighter, as well.

Another bull suggested that they talk to the lion to see if he would leave them alone. But the other three bulls disagreed. The lion didn’t care about their desires. He only wanted to eat them.

Finally, the third bull suggested that they work together to save themselves from the lion. He suggested that each time the lion came to the field, they should stand back to back. That way, anywhere the lion went, he would be met with heavy horns and a strong kick from the legs. All bulls agreed that this was a great plan.

The next day, the lion came sauntered through the field. The bulls quickly got in their circle. No matter where the lion attacked, he was met with kicks and horns.

The plan worked until one day the bulls got in a fight. They each went to a corner of the field. When the lion came to make his attack, he got each of the bulls without a struggle.
