The Long Jump

Frieda the goat loved to go to the well. Each day she stopped to get a long drink. On this particular day, she could hear noises coming from the well. She went to the well to see what was inside.

What she saw down in the well caught her by surprise. There was a wolf. He was so big that he could barely fit inside the well.

“What are you doing?” asked Frieda.
“Getting a drink,” replied the frustrated wolf.

“But why did you get inside the well to get the drink?” asked Frieda.
“Oh, it’s much easier this way,” lied the wolf. “Besides, I can get a much bigger drink down here.”
“Oh,” answered Frieda, and she waited patiently for her turn.

After a few minutes, the wolf asked Frieda if she wouldn’t mind helping him out of the well. Frieda thought about it for a minute and decided that she should help. The wolf told her to climb inside the well and then he would step on her back to get out.

“But then how will I get out myself?” asked Frieda.
“We’ll figure something out,” replied the wolf.

Frieda climbed down into the well, and the wolf stepped on her back to get out. The wolf disappeared and Frieda hollered, “Hey! Aren’t you going to help me?”

The wolf came back and peered down into the well. “You foolish goat! You should have never jumped down into the well.” And with that, he hurried off into the forest.
