A Safe Landing
Jacob’s family had just staked the claim for the land two weeks before. They were clearing the land of trees to begin their crops. Jacob and his pa had been working long days to accomplish the task.
Thanks to Old Blue, the job was a bit easier. As each tree was cut down, Pa would attach a chain to the horse, and Old Blue would help pull the large stump out of the dirt.
“Let’s do one more, Jake,” encouraged Pa. “That way, the first section will be done.”
Pa attached the chain once and stepped back to allow Old Blue to do her job. Jacob slowly got to his feet and began pushing the log. Every muscle in his body was taut and aching. The stump started to budge.
Just then, a loud SNAP could be heard. As if in slow motion, Jacob saw the chain break free from the horse and fly toward his father. Jacob lunged at his father, knocking him to the ground. Jacob lay on top of his father panting. Sweat dripped from his face, and he peered into the eyes of his father. Pa turned his head to hide the tear that was trickling down the side of his face, but Jacob saw it.
“Thanks, Jake,” said Pa quietly. “I can’t thank you enough.”
“No problem, Pa,” replied Jacob. “Why don’t we call it a day?”
“Great idea,” said Pa as he hugged his boy. And yet, this boy seemed more like a man.
