Amazing Grace
Grace careened around the corner on her scooter. She was desperate to beat James. James lived next door and was always trying to prove how good he was at everything. His attitude of superiority was annoying, and Grace felt certain that she could prove him wrong at least once.
Grace could feel James behind her, and she smiled when she realized that indeed he was. If only she could hold on.
“Go, Grace,” yelled Cindy. Cindy was Grace’s younger sister, and she knew what Grace had invested in this race.
With three laps still to go, Grace knew that she had to gain some momentum. Just then, Kelly, Mrs. Olson’s dog, came running out of her yard and began chasing them. Her adrenaline pumped out of fear. Kelly, the little Scottie dog, was known for biting the neighborhood kids.
Two more laps to go and Grace could feel her muscles tightening. Kelly was still chasing them, but they were a little faster than she was. Kelly’s legs were just too short.
In the final lap, Grace knew that James was waiting for her speed to dwindle and her strength to give way. Grace aggressively attacked the last corner and let out a loud grunt as she did so.
In the last few yards, Grace felt as though she could give no more. She reached across the finish line as James lunged beside her. Was it enough? Had Grace been able to do it?
