Marla’s Cookie Monster
Marla pulled a mixing bowl down from the cupboard and set the ingredients to make cookies on the counter. She began mixing the shortening and the eggs together. It wasn’t long before she pulled the first batch out. She wrote a note next to the cookies explaining that they were not to be eaten. She needed to take some to the piano recital that evening and there wouldn’t be enough. She promised in the note to make another batch tomorrow. In a family with six children, Marla knew that they would be disappointed, but she just didn’t have time to make more today.
Marla left for her piano lesson at Mrs. Beasley’s. Upon her return, she was stunned to see that the cookies had been gotten into. Her note was gone, and now she was furious.
“Jacob, Jessy, Chrissy, Marshall, and Dakota get down here right now!”
All of Marla’s siblings raced down the stairs. “I know one of you ate my cookies even though I wrote a note stating they were not to be touched.”
“I didn’t touch your dumb cookies,” said Jacob.
“I didn’t either,” protested Chrissy.
“None of us did,” said Jessy.
“Someone did and I am determined find out. Open your mouths!” demanded Marla. Each of the kids opened their mouths for inspection. Marla couldn’t find any cookie evidence.
Just then, Marla’s dad came walking in whistling as he went.
“Dad?” asked Marla. “Did you enjoy any cookies today?”
All of the kids held their breath.
